Posts: 605 (12/05/07 15:19:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I thought I read somewhere that people can sometimes STAY in their own induced psychosis after having quit the drug. I sort of worry about my daughter still being delusional. When I think she says some "out there" stuff, I remain silent, thinking, "this too shall pass."??? I've said this many times before, but I have to keep remembering what our addiction counselor told us: It takes 18 months to 2 yrs. for the brain to "reset" itself from this drug. mlg

I've never heard or seen anything that indicates that one could stay in meth induced paranoia after the drug was removed. My information is empirical however. Nevertheless, I've worked with hundreds of meth users and in my experience, people do heal after the drug is removed. Also, bear in mind that the first five years are often called "Early Recovery." That's an AA definition. Not all mental conditions are a result of meth use - even among meth users. Plenty of us are just plaing goofy, a bit "off-center" and dwell in the more bizarre areas of human endeavor, with or without drugs. ( except Suz, Penelope labeled her as being Normal )

Meth causes the body to destroy it's own dopamine (among other things). Studies have shown that addicts who stayed clean for 18 months had roughly 80% of a normal person's dopamine activity level. Abusing meth is very simply put, self-induced mental illness, that is not recovered from quickly.

Posts: 1882 (12/05/07 15:38:49) Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Just from what I've read of where your daughter is at in her recovery right now (residing in the sober house, full-time job, etc), she's pretty high functioning to apply any sort of post-meth psychosis/paranoia label to the situation. Not knowing what she's saying that you are perceiving as 'out there', I'm not sure what else I can do to ease your mind. I was still prone to a lot of old behaviors/attitudes in my early years of recovery. I'm speaking of things like being emotionally immature, selfish, demanding, whiney! I did have a lot of trouble with memory, and still do. I was still quick to react, vs. taking time to think and work through it. I didn't always make the best decisions. I was extremely thin-skinned when it came to being hurt by what other people said/did/thought. I'm still learning to be a mature, rational, responsible human being I have times I still react, but those are getting few and far between. I am aware of it as soon as I do it I have days I don't make the best decision because I'm overly emotional. Again, that continues to get better I still have days I get on the pity pot, but I don't sit on it nearly as long and get a REALLY deep red ring on my hiney!

Posts: 605 (12/05/07 15:55:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I won't relate to you guys what I perceived as "out there," (I promised my daughter I would listen, not judge, and keep things between us)....but it was very, very deep. She is not only involved with A.A. 12-Step, but has become very engrossed in Native American 12-Step. She had her dad and I watch (with her) "The Medicine Wheel" it moved me to tears as it opened up with 4 women holding hands inside a prison chained linked fence, one Asian, one African American, one Native, and one White. It was very moving, as he spoke to the women, mostly in there for addiction. Anyway, I won't say any more, other than very moving, very deep, and out of the box for most of what you hear from 12 Step recovery. mlg

I sincerely believe she suffers from some kind of mental health issue. However, this does not mean this is the case with your daughter. I know I was somewhat delusional months after using. Sometimes it takes a long time for reality to firmly make it's place in your mind. Maybe delusional isn't the word, perhaps disoriented.

Give her time, mlg. Some of us are just "Out there," sometimes people have underlying mental disorders... But this early in the game, it's really too early to be anything but grateful that she is clean. And Suz is Normal, yes.

Even for myself it took quite some time before I realized that some of the things I thought happened were not REAL. My X wife is clean and is still ""out there"" and who knows when her mind will heal from psychosis. While having psychosis the things that someone thinks becomes REAL and no one can tell the person otherwise. Take away the drug and it is possible (got to choose my words LOL) that the person will still believe the insane crap that they saw and believed while in psychosis. Just MY opinion from MY personal experiances broken

Being in the arts myself, there are PLENTY of us. I told Suz I can relate to her a LITTLE, myself having an attention span of a gnat. Believe me, I am soooooo grateful she is in recovery. Anything that is replacing the addiction need, whether it would be basket weaving, is FINE with me at this point in time! mlg

They had unlying mental health issues that were either covered up by using drugs or made worse by using drugs. It varied from person to person. My Mom thinks I'm a raving maniac when I have a manic cycle. I talk fast and have lots of thoughts and clean clean clean and lose my train of thought in a instant. The cycles are less and less now that I'm on medication but I waited until I was a year clean to get on meds in case it was drug induced and if it was I assumed it would clear on it's own. Thing is I suffered from depression from a early age way before drugs were in the picture. I got my first antidepressant script at 13. Drugs made things worse for me, at least I think so.
