People with mental disorders who also abuses substances have a poor prognosis of getting better and living productive lives, this is especially true with thought and personality disorders . There are a few rare cases of folks defying the odds but most never do recover because of chronic symptoms such as impulsivity and chronic emptiness as well as severe rage issues. Those who do NOT have these issues tell the addict to just man up and get clean , but they do not understand the complexity of these illnesses.
Being homeless further complicates the situation as staying clean on the streets for anyone is a challenge but for the mentally ill person even more challenging . Let's look at Borderline Personality Disorder for instance , 69 % of BPD sufferers are addicts and less than 10 % ever recover from their dual issues and continue to abuse drugs and/or alcohol and as such are rageful and angry with others ( as you may have noticed with me )
So, why am I telling you all of this , just want to educate people on how difficult and in some cases impossible it is for people with these disorders not to relapse and participate in abusive and self destructive behaviors. Regardless of your thoughts on this issue, people ( like me ) who face these challenges are NOT at fault for their behaviors and therefor why should they be blamed for them or held accountable ?
