If I were to keep score I think I would find many more instances where people were selfishly motivated as opposed to having altruistic motives.
However, there are instances where people are motivated by altruistic motives and when that occurs it is so powerful that it can lift ones spirit beyond the many selfish motivated acts.
Lori, in addition to the events in our personal lives I do think that that the recent political occurrences as well as the economical crises add to one being cynical.
On the other hand, my addict son has shown appreciation for me putting him in jail, for me sticking by him, and always trying to do what is best for him. He is not doing this to get anything but it is genuine appreciation. That can ward off a lot of cynicism for me!
I must be fortunate as I have had several people in my life that demonstrated some forms of altruism. Without these people I would become one grumpy old man.
Lori, Good post!!!
WHY?
Because it reminded me that I can improve my own cynicism by using my free will to do something that is NOT motivated by my selfish concern
