Therapy is not useless for those that are still using - it is worse than useless. Because trying to solve any other issues while still using will certainly end in failure - and therefore add to an addict's depression and lower their self-worth or self-esteem because they have then failed at yet another task.

The addict should be at least 90 days clean. Any sooner and you are just wasting your time and money.

Don't ask her to quit "forever" - that may sounds too daunting for your addict to even comprehend. Set a small goal (like 90 days) - she may then see this as achieveable.

Tell her also that there may be the added benefit of staying clean for a few months - she may be able to deal with her underlying issues more effectively with a therapist if she is clean.

Good luck
