Hi there.  Welcome to KCI.  My name is Carol.  I used meth for 27 years, and I have been clean for 8 years.  Vitamins certainly couldn't hurt, as meth use does deplete our bodies of just about everything.  As far as food goes you will just have to experiment. Try taking him shopping with you, and let him pick out whatever looks good to him.  I craved a lot of sugars, and greasy foods in the beginning.  I believe that our bodies crave what they need at the time. I was also craving strange things like pickles, olives, and artichoke hearts.  Ice cream was a favorite of mine.  I tend to believe that I used it for a pleasure response by trying to replace the hole in me left by the meth.  As time went by I started craving healthier foods.  Frozen foods are not as good as fresh foods, but when we first getting clean we have little energy, so we tend to eat more if it only takes us a couple of minutes to make it.  Just because we have a craving for something now, doesn't mean that we will still want it 45 minutes from now.

.....Getting clean is a long process.  Depending on how long he was using meth will depend on how long recovery will take.  If he was using it for a year or two, then it will probably take that long before he is really back to himself again.  Since he is young, hopefully he will be able to reverse any damage that he has done to his body and brain.  Many people relapse.  Try to keep him busy with other things.  Boredom is what usually gets us to use again.  If you can get him interested in a hobby or something that keeps him occupied, then he will have a much better chance of remaining clean.  He is lucky that he has a father like you that cares.

......There are a lot of good meth letters and stories on this website that you can read.  Just click on the links for the different months, and you can read all of the stories and letters that were received that month.  The more that you learn about meth addiction, the better able you will be to help him.  You will also know what signs to look for to know if he starts using again.  It sounds like he is on the right road to recovery, but that does not mean that the hard part is over.  Staying away from it long term is the hard part.  Feel free to ask us any questions that you may have, and we will be happy to answer them.  Taking care of a recovering meth addict can be difficult, so make sure that you are taking care of yourself first.  I wish you the best of luck.  Carol
