I didn't eat the grunions, but everyone else in my family did.  Bones and all.  They cooked them over an open flame on sticks, like you do with marshmallows.  I could hear the crunching when they ate them. 

From what I remember, they're about twice the size of a sardine - maybe a little bigger.  You catch them with your hands as they come to shore to lay their eggs, and throw them in gunny sacks (at least that's what we did).

Except for shellfish, I didn't like fish when I was young, so I don't know what they taste like.
