Tammy, I always had a tough time with the dentist too, in fact when I was a kid the dentist that the family went to wouldn't even treat me, he sent me to a
guy who worked on kids that couldn't handle it. All he did was gas me up and I hated that even more.
So when I got older I pretty much quit going, add meth on top of that and my teeth were in pretty bad shape. I have spent a lot of time at the dentist over the last couple of years, and it's a real "white knuckle" trip for me. But here is the real deal about root canals....they aren't that bad. The worst part by far is the shot's you get up front, but the pain is brief! You can handle it, it's just a couple of hours in the chair, maybe some soreness the next day, but overall... It really ain't that bad and it's over before you know it. Taking a pill for your nerves could be just the ticket to get you thru it with minimum stress.

Hang in there Tammy, it's going to be allright. People have this procedure done all the time. It might hurt some, but you know, not anything near the kind
of pain I've seen you make it through. If you call the dentist about the nerves, make sure you let them know about any other medication you're on.
I'm terrified of dental work, too. I fret about it for days when I know I have to go. |

Oh, and another thing...
When I was sitting in that chair it really hit home that it was my lifestyle that had gotten me to that point. It felt really good that I was confronting my fears and doing what I had to do, it was healthy for me to feel that discomfort that I had brought on myself. I was also aware of how this was an area of my life that even though I had damaged myself, there was an opportunity to repair it, but it had a price, I had to endure things that were uncomfortable. It was one of those "No pain No gain" hurdles.... But I did it, and I feel really good about it. And now I go to the dentist for a check-up and cleaning every 6 months and it's a piece of cake! |

I'm also a white knuckle dental chicken. I've had a root canal in one of my front teeth also. The novocaine going in is the worst pain, in my
thoughts. Once that's done and starting to work, I usually start to calm down. If it's a dentist you don't know, just tell him you're a big
chicken. I always did that to new ones. They understand. The last root canal I got I felt a little pain, raise my hand and he stopped. I told him I felt
that and a good rule of thumb for me is "numb from the waist up and I'll be O.K." He laughed and gave me more novocaine and all was well. Good
luck. I know you will be glad when that procedure is done. I used to watch clocks if they had one in the room also. I knew how long the appt. was and would
figure out how long I had to go before I could bust outta there.

Tammy, my 16 year old stepdaughter amanda had two root canals at the same time, and she said it didn't hurt too bad. Dentist's have gotten a lot better
at what they do since we were kids. If you can handle the Greyhound bus for all those hours - you can handle anything!
(Your kitty is waiting for you, BTW. All the other kitties have homes - the nice ones - but I still have your little sweetie here. He asked where you were...) Smile! |

(Skeered ) Is only with the unknown, I hate Dentists , no offense to the Dental Association , however I can't
remember one single root canal I've gone through that I wouldn't do again.
Times have changed , while it's not something I'd do every weekend, it's not that bad. A little nitrous, some music on the headphones and it was over before I even knew they had started ! |

Tammy. I think i went 10 or so years without going to a dentist because i was so scared. i really really h ated it but after i quit meth my teeth hurt and you
know the kind of damage that it does to your teeth along with neglecting them. So i went to a dentist that specializes in high anxiety patients. I love my
dentist and his staff. They are so sweet and considerate.
I will say that they would just give you a valium for anxiety and i don't know if they will even do that. I know if it was me, i'd most likely try to come up with the extra money to be put under while the dentist performed this. Pen is right though. the dentist of today is nothing like the dentist of yesterday. Just relax and realize it isn't going to be as bad as you think. Don't sweat it too much. Our nerves are worse than anything. You can do it hun. |

Tammy -
You can get through this and you will be proud of yourself for confronting your fear and moving through it! We'll be thinking of you - we'll be sending you zen relaxation vibes to get you through it. When you get there sink down in the chair try and take a deep breathe and then send your mind on vacation - like seriously pretend you are on a beach and what it feels like to feel the sun on your skin, hear the gulls in the background, the rhythmic sound of waves washing up on the shore, smell the ocean and feel the sand under your toes.. Think of something calming like that and try to put yourself there. We'll be laying out a picnic down the beach by the third life guard stand and awaiting your arrival! Okay? (((((((((Tammy))))))))) |
