There is a forest fire about five miles from my house right now. Spotter planes, boray planes (The ones that drop flame retardant) and helicopters keep
flying over the house. So far it is only a few acres in size - it is 5:18 here right now, and the fire started at about 3 PM.
The fire is in the woods for now, and we just have to keep our ears and eyes open and wait to see what happens next. There are no ashes raining here yet or
anything like that. It's a little bit windy, so that makes things worse, and scarier.
Everything is really dry this year... this is pretty scary. Gonna get offline now.. stupid dial up. Gonna keep the phone available for just in case, ya
know?

Hope everything is ok Pen. I know how that is...we get fires around here, but thankfull our house it not in a wooded area. Let us know how everything is ok?

OK - not at work now.
That gets really scary - we have had raining ash here before from fires that were a lot farther away, so we just kinda hung out and watched the helicopters and planes going around and around - but they got this fire out pretty quick, thank God. It is so dry here this year, we haven't had any big fires for a few years, so this is a scary fire year. One thing about this area, though - there's a fire department in every neighborhood, an airstrike base not to far from here, Department of Forestry everywhere, and the local prison is a "Conservation Camp," where the inmates are trained to be fire fighters. They put it out in a couple of hours. I was still poopin in my drawers, though. This fire was literally minutes away as the crow flies - and when a fire gets going, they go fast! |

Glad everything was put out.. Sounds like you live around plenty of people that know how to spit on those fires.
I will sanitize those pants for ya Pen.. Heck, I change dirty diapers daily.  I almost crapped mine. I zoomed to the end of the thread thinking, I hope everything is o.k... Sometimes it helps to be late. Not very often though.

I was watching tv footage on the fires in the Everglades and people are evacuating. I wonder if Suzy lives near there....
I was at Lake Shasta once when there were fires so seemingly close that we had lots of smoke at our cabin right off I5. I was VERY SCARED mainly because I am not from there and knowing the escape routes is so very important. Pen, you oughta have a cb or single side band radio set up there. That's what I'd have if I lived in the sticks. glad it's over... luv |

How scary!! Fires are awful and do move awfully fast. We've never had one near our home, but we have gotten ashes and smoke from fires. Last year we had
lots of smoke. One year we could see the fire as it was heading towards Happy Camp. I remember once we went fishing and had to leave because a forest fire had
started, that was the scariest for me. As we were heading home we could see the flames! Glad that all is well with you Pen, and they got that fire out quickly!

Yeah, we've had plenty of nights when you can see fires glowing in the distance - in 2001 we had one to the east, one to the south, and one to the north -
big fires - and that was the year it really rained a lot of ash (A black oak leave fell out of the sky - that was spooky!)
Then 9/11 happened, and the fires seemed less important. It was really kind of weird. It is scary, though, to see the sky glowing in the distance at night, and see the plumes of smoke during the day - we get fires every year, but the one on Friday was REALLY close to my house. Eek. |
